The La Liga giants sold their grounds in 2001 in a deal which allowed the club to clear a massive mountain of debt. The deal was reported to be worth EUR480m to the club.
According to reports, the European Commission will investigate to see if the city paid over the odds for the ground – and thereby effectively gave Real a state subsidy.
It is claimed city officials re-zoned the area of the city which included the training ground, sending its price soaring, and then bought it.
Said EC spokesman Tilman Lueder: “We believe there may be certain state aid elements attached to this.
"We believe the city of Madrid may have overpaid."
