With the race to host the first World Cup in Africa hotting up just months before a final decision is made, South Africa is hoping desperately it will make up for losing out to Germany in 2006.
Speaking to local reporters, Danny Jordaan, the chief executive of the South African bid, said everything was on track and that campaigning would continue until the very last minute.
Said Jordaan: “We are pretty optimistic.
“But it is clear to us that Egypt is quite a strong bid. They have been working hard and are coming through in the closing stages. Morocco is also a strong contender.”
Many observers see Morocco as the strongest rival to South Africa. Its proximity to Europe and strong leadership team is seen by many as a credible rival to South Africa which has been hot favourite ever since the race first began.
Said Jordaan: “We are not going to stop campaigning until FIFA stops us and tells us we can do no more.”
FIFA make a final decision on May 15.
The team behind the South African bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup say they are ‘optimistic’ of victory – but said rival bids from Egypt and Morocco could not be dismissed.
