Rothenberg teams up with Morocco

The chief of the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the US has confirmed he is to play a key role in Morocco’s push to host the 2010 tournament.

Alan Rothenberg, who was chairman and CEO of the 1994 organising committee, was also chairman of the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, president of the US Soccer Federation, founder of Major League Soccer and, most recently, launched the Premier Partnerships sponsorship agency with Randy Bernstein.
Said Rothenberg: “The world needs to showcase a tolerant, progressive Muslim state more than anything else. I signed up because I think they can do a better job in selling themselves.”
Morocco is perceived as the closest rival to favourite South Africa to host the event.
Hank Steinbrecher, former US Soccer general secretary, and Bob Stiles, who worked with Rothenberg on the 1999 Women’s World Cup, will also assist the Morocco bid.
