United stock rises

Shares in English soccer giants Manchester United closed up two percent yesterday after it was confirmed US businessman Malcolm Glazer had increased his stake in the team.

Glazer bought a further one million shares in the club to increase his holding from 16.31 percent to 16.69 percent.

Glazer, owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL franchise, has refused to rule out a takeover bid for the club and is being monitored by the Takeover Panel on the London Stock Exchange.

United suffered a blow on the pitch last night, however, losing 2-1 away to Porto in the Champions League.
