The IOC will decide within the coming weeks whether to approve plans to extend the speed skating programme at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin – giving the sport crucial extra exposure on the biggest sporting stage.

Gerd Zimmermann, vice president of the International Skating Union, said both the 100m sprint and team pursuit could be added, subject to IOC approval.

The situation has arisen courtesy of other events concluding earlier, leaving two free days of competition.
