NFL exec joins licensing firm

A leading NFL executive has quit to join a US licensing and rights-clearing agency.

Derrick Heggans, assistant counsel for broadcast operations and policy at the NFL, is quitting after this weekend’s Super Bowl to join Collegiate Images (CI), an agency specializing in the licensing of copyrighted and trademarked images and footage of major universities, conferences, bowl games and networks.

Heggans will become CI’s senior vice president and chief operating officer. His responsibilities will include overseeing broadcast policies and initiatives, negotiating contracts and supervising the company’s day-to-day operations.

During Heggans’ six seasons with the NFL, he assisted the broadcasting department, NFL Films and NFL Enterprises in negotiating, structuring and administering various media contracts. In addition, he advised clubs on broadcast issues, managed league participation in copyright tribunals in the US and Canada, served as the chief business affairs counsel for Super Bowl, Pro Bowl and other NFL-run special events, and negotiated various NFL-sponsorship agreements.

Said Heggans: “The NFL is one of the best places in the world for working in the business of sports, and in particular for sports media, and I wouldn’t be leaving them if I didn’t feel there was something special about Collegiate Images.

“In the coming years, I think you’re going to see Collegiate Images become one of the sports world’s premier licensing entities.”
