Montgomerie is planning to join fellow Scot Emma Richards' crew for next year's 30,000 nautical mile race.
The former European number one will join Richards and America's Cup star Mike Sanderson for one leg of the competition depending on his schedule.
Montgomerie's presence in the crew may well bring new fans to sailing given the Scottish golfer's popularity with his traditional followers.
The nine-month race begins on November 23 at Vigo in northern Spain and comprises nine tough off-shore legs and seven inshore races in stopover ports.
