Leeds set for ownership battle

With just one week before a self-imposed deadline expires, English Premier League team Leeds United seems set to look to the Middle East for a financial rescue package.

According to the latest reports, Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Mubarak Al-Khalifa, long-linked with a possible takeover, is understood to have formed a consortium which will go head-to-head with a rival bid from Allan Leighton, the former deputy chairman of the club who stepped down recently to allow him to push for power.

Leeds had set a January 19 deadline for a takeover proposal to be presented – or face the very real danger of going into administration.

Already struggling near the foot of the Premier League, administration may result in a points penalty which could leave them facing relegation and the loss of crucial revenues.
The club has debts in the region of £80m.
