UEFA president in cancer scare

UEFA president Lennart Johansson has confirmed speculation about his health by revealing he has undergone surgery for colon cancer.

Johansson, whose term as president expires in 2006, said he had been forced to miss the draw for the Euro 2004 tournament in Portugal last month as a result of the surgery.

He added the surgery appeared to have been successful and that he had now resumed his activities and commitments with European soccer’s governing body.

He is quoted as saying: "I took time off to recover, but am now up and running again.

"I feel splendid."
