Rogge 'confident' of Athens

IOC president Jacques Rogge has sent a new year message to organisers of the Athens Olympic Games as the countdown to this summer’s event begins in earnest.

Despite some concerns, Athens has made considerable progress in recent months and at the turn of the year there were no major concerns over plans.

Said Rogge: “The Olympic Games will be returning to Athens in a little over seven months time.

“Organising the games is always a real challenge. And there will be difficult days ahead. But this is a great and inspiring task. The legacy for all of Greece will be tremendous, as many of you have already started to see.

“The International Olympic Committee has every confidence in the preparations. We would like to thank the Greek people, ATHOC, the government and all those who have volunteered their help. The world is waiting impatiently to come back to the roots of Olympism. I wish you the best of luck and a very happy new year.”
