ESPN Classic passes 50m

Archive US sports channel ESPN Classic his broken the 50 million household mark in terms of its potential audience.

According to Nielsen Media Research figures for December, the network is now in 50,847,000 US homes, which marks a nearly two percent increase in the past month and nearly an eight percent growth in 2003.
ESPN Classic reached 30 million homes just over three years ago and has been growing by an average of more than a half million households per month since that time.
"This is a very significant moment for this network," said Mark Shapiro, executive vice president of programming and production, ESPN. "ESPN Classic has long been shaped by a vision to serve as the curator of sports. This milestone clearly illustrates ESPN Classic's undeniable value."
"This distribution milestone for ESPN Classic is a testament to the extraordinary value of our brand," added Sean Bratches, executive vice president, affiliate sales and marketing, ESPN.
"ESPN Classic is another example of the ways ESPN is continuing to develop products and services that help drive our affiliates' businesses by serving the sports fan."
