Beckham pays-off Stephens

Real Madrid soccer star David Beckham has paid-off the man who guided him to becoming one of the most successful commercial commodities in the sporting world.

Beckham has reportedly paid £2m to SFX to part company with Tony Stephens – the agent who formulated a ten-year plan which took Beckham from obscurity to global stardom. The money represents commission due for sponsorship deals.

Stephens, recognised as the mastermind behind a carefully constructed image of the England captain, took Beckham into the SFX camp when the entertainment giant snapped up his TSA agency.

The move follows a well-publicised split earlier this year when Beckham informed Stephens and SFX he was splitting from them – apparently just weeks after agreeing a new contract.

Beckham has now created Footwork Productions, based in Madrid.

He will also work closer to Simon Fuller’s 19 company. Fuller, the man behind the hugely successful Pop Idol franchise, also represents Beckham’s wife – the former Spice Girl, Victoria ‘Posh’ Beckham.
