AFL chief revises structure

The Australian Football League's chief executive Andrew Demetriou has announced a revised organisational structure for the league's executive team.

Demetriou said the revised structure was designed to allow the AFL to meet some key challenges and to continue to build Australian Rules Football at all levels.
He stated: "The AFL Executive is presently preparing a new three year strategic plan, which we expect to be presented to the AFL Commission before Christmas, and this new structure will allow us to better meet the challenges that we have before us.
"We have just completed one of our best ever seasons with attendances reaching the third highest total on record, club memberships at an all time record high, healthy growth in television audiences, a high level of interest in the competition throughout Australia and continued growth in participation.
"This new structure will allow us to build on those strengths, and to focus our resources on delivering appropriate outcomes to our clubs, the millions of people who attend games and support our clubs and all levels of grass roots football throughout Australia.
"The game itself is healthy - the changes I have outlined today are designed to meet various off-field challenges."
The changes will be implemented within the 3 percent administrative increase provided for in the AFL's 2004 budget and will be implemented before Christmas but some positions will be filled in early 2004.
The AFL also announced the appointment of Adrian Anderson to the position of general manager of football operations.
The 31-year old Anderson is a partner in one of Australia's leading law firms, Corrs Chambers Westgarth specialising in media and sports law.
