WTA Tour president and CEO Larry Scott confirmed the 11-month calendar would be but by a week in 2006 and by two weeks in 2007.
Said Scott: “For the next few years, the direction I am going to be taking is not to be expanding the number of events, but to be looking at what we have and see how we can get more value of it.''
He gave no indication, however, of what tournaments may be hurt by the move, but did hint that the WTA and ATP are close to agreement on combining their season-ending championships, possibly by 2006.
The WTA is to shorten its season in 2006 – and then again in 2007 – in response to complaints from players, raising the question as to what events could be cut from the schedule.
