Montreal loses Gay Games

Tagged in &

The Federation of Gay Games (FGG) has withdrawn its support for Montreal’s hosting of the 2006 event in a row over funding – yet organisers insist a rival event will still take place.

After crunch meetings to iron out mounting issues relating to the financial liability of the event and budgets, the FGG pulled the plug on plans for the VII Gay Games to be staged in Canada.

Said Mark Tewksbury, co-president of Montreal 2006: “This date will remain for me, and for thousands of gay and lesbian athletes around the world, a day of mourning. MontrC)al’s opportunity to bring forward the ideals of participation, inclusion and personal best have just been crushed by the members of the Federation of Gay Games who have, after two years of negotiations, rejected MontrC)al’s final offer to present the Games.”

The main bone of contention has been over the FGG’s continued insistence on having complete financial control of the event.
