DFB scores big cash goal

German soccer governing body the DFB has said it could fulfil its financial commitments for up to two years without earning an extra Euro – such is its financial security.

In unveiling its latest finance figures, the DFB said it had no debts and in 2002 earned EUR61.3m ($70.3m) – primarily courtesy of EUR15.8m ($18.5m) generated through a new TV deal for the German national team with SportA, the sports rights and marketing agency of German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF.
It invested EUR14.9m ($17m) on preparations for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, to be staged in Germany.
Said DFB financial chief Theo Zwanziger: “We could fulfil our duties for the next 18 months or even up to two years without getting any more income.”
Zwanziger is also vice-president of the organising committee for the 2006 finals.

Last month, the DFB - Deutscher Fussball-Bund - signed a new marketing agreement for its national sides with Infront, running from July 2004 to June 2009.

It included all matches played by Germany's national teams home and away - excluding matches of the UEFA European Football Championship and the FIFA World Cup.
