Italian law under EC spotlight

Tagged in , &

A number of major Italian soccer clubs face a possible financial crisis if the EU rules against a rule passed by the Italian government granted clubs the opportunity to spread repayment of debts.

The Commission meets in Brussels next week – November 11 – and will discuss the Salva Calcio amendment which allows clubs to spread debts over ten years, amid fears it contravenes European law.
Salva Calcio – ‘Save Football’ – was passed by Italy’s lower house of parliament earlier this year in a bid to give clubs in the top divisions with heavy debts to safeguard their immediate futures.
According to reports in Italy, clubs taking advantage of the decree include AC Milan, Lazio and Roma.
The EC fears such a ruling gives the clubs an unfair competitive advantage.
