Arsenal deny Russian link

English Premier League club Arsenal have denied reports its vice-chairman has been trying too woo wealthy Russian businessmen with a view to investing in the club’s new stadium.

The club dismissed the claims David Dein had made two approaches to wealthy Russian businessman to help fund their Ashburton Grove project as ‘pure speculation’.

According to reports earlier this week in the UK press, Dein had spoken to both industry tycoon and billionaire Vladimir Potanin and aluminium magnate Oleg Deripaska.

Arsenal is just the latest club to be linked to a big money injection from Russia, following Roman Abramovich’s sensational takeover and extravagant spending spree at rival London club Chelsea.
