Blatter 'no' to joint 2010 bids

FIFA has ruled out any joint bids for the 2010 World Cup in Africa – crushing hopes of a united Tunisia and Libya proposal.

As FIFA received the official documentation from nations hoping to host the first World Cup in Africa, president Sepp Blatter said one solo bids would be considered.
It followed a joint bid from Tunisia and Libya – in addition to single bids.
Said Blatter: “The call for bids was only for individual candidatures.”
FIFA is keen to avoid the problems encountered at the 2002 tournament jointly staged in South Korea and Japan.
Other bids for the tournament were received from South Africa, Egypt and Morocco.
Nigeria yesterday withdrew from the race.

The inspection visits to the bidding nations will commence next month, October 7-14 in Morocco and October 19-November 5 in South Africa, and reach
their conclusion early next year.

A detailed report will subsequently be compiled, upon which the members of the FIFA Executive Committee will base their final decision regarding the host nation in spring 2004.
