CART unveils 2004 plans

CART has confirmed 15 races for 2004 - the first season the open-wheel racing series is set to race under new ownership.

With shareholders due to vote on the proposal put forward by the Open Wheel Racing Series consortium to take over the series in November, plans for a season some thought would never happen have been unveiled.
The 15 confirmed dates include 14 traditional Champ Car venues with the new addition of the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway oval.
In addition, there are six other venues that are also under consideration for spots on next year's schedule.
On the 'to be decided' list are the two European races - in Germany and England - and plans for a race in a yet-to-confirmed east Asia venue.
Says Chris Pook, CART CEO: "The addition of such a strong market such as Las Vegas, where our television numbers have always been well above average, gives us even more reason to be excited about the upcoming campaign.
"We are confident that 2004 will provide our fans, sponsors, teams and drivers with a series that they can be proud of and that delivers maximum value across the board."
Pook, however, is thought unlikely to see the new season still as CEO. Should a takeover succeed he will almost certainly step down, while failure to agree to Open Wheel's proposal is likely to send CART into liquidation.
The confirmed dates will see the series race in four different countries, including three stops in Canada, two in Mexico along with the annual sojourn to Surfers Paradise in Australia. Oval races will take place at California Speedway and the Milwaukee Mile along with Las Vegas, while road and street circuits will be raced in Cleveland, Denver, Long Beach, Miami, St. Petersburg and Elkhart Lake.
CART says the complete event and television schedule will be announced in the 'very near future'.
Dates for any of the races have yet to be confirmed.
