Suzuka loses MotoGP place

Tagged in

The Japanese motorcycling race at Suzuka has been dropped from the 2004 MotoGP calendar after the sport's governing body decided that the track could not meet the required safety improvements.

The 2004 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka had been set to take place on April 4 but the FIM decided that safety improvements could not be completed in time.
Japan's Motegi circuit, which had been scheduled to hold the Pacific Grand Prix, will stage the Japanese GP instead in September.
The move to drop Suzuka from the MotoGP calendar follows Daijiro Kato's fatal accident at the track in April. Kato died from injuries suffered at Suzuka when his Telefonica Movistar Honda crashed into a concrete wall at high speed.
An FIM statement read: "The Suzuka circuit has established a long-term programme of works including various modifications aiming at improving the circuit, principally the safety in view of the Grand Prix.

"This programme of modifications to improve safety has been discussed at length with the Grand Prix Safety Commission. These modifications, however, cannot be carried out before the Grand Prix scheduled in April."

Suzuka is expected to return to the MotoGP calendar in 2005 once the improvements have been made.
