Serie A expanded as row ends

Italy’s Serie A soccer league will be expanded to 20 teams next season as part of a peace deal to resolve a row which saw the majority of Serie B clubs boycott the start of the season.

Clubs had refused to play the opening matches of the new season after plans were unveiled to expand Serie B to include 24 teams and reinstate the teams relegated.

However, the damaging row has now been settled after the Italian Football League confirmed Serie A would expand from 18 to 20 clubs, and Serie B boast 22 clubs.

The deal will mean five teams promoted from Serie B at the end of the current season, while three will drop down from the higher division.
