Malaysian FA revamps league

The Football Association of Malaysia is set to offer up significant prize money to the winners of its new Super League - just one of a number of changes aimed at boosting the domestic competition.

A sum of RM500,000 awaits next year's Super League champions as the FA of Malaysia attempts to ensure the elite competition lives up to its new image and status.
The lucrative prize money is among several proposals submitted to the FAM Council for consideration and adoption.
The details of the proposals, should they be endorsed by the Council, are expected to be announced in November.
Many of the proposals are the brainchild of FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah who envisages the Super League will act as a feeding ground to support success at a national level.
"The Competitions Committee is in the final stages of fine-tuning its report on the implementation of next year's Super League and Premier One competition," stated Tengku Abdullah.
"We have made several recommendations for the Council's consideration. Among them are an increase in prize money and opening the doors to more foreign players. There will be a substantial increase in prize money but, at the moment, I am not at liberty to disclose the details which are subject to discussion and change. But a sum of RM500,000 in prize money for the Super League champions is a very strong possibility.
"And, if we can find the sponsors, the prize money might even be increased to one million ringgit."
Another important recommendation concerns FAM's annual grant to its affiliates. With the FAM-Dunhill sponsorship deal coming to an end next year, there will be a reduction in annual grants.
Commented Tengku Abdullah: "The practice of providing uniform grants to State FAs will be a thing of the past. Teams who perform will be rewarded while those who fail will have to accept lower grants.
"With such a move, the FAs will have to be serious about their role in promoting the game. They cannot be lulled into complacency hoping FAM will be there to always provide financial assistance."
