Bernie stubs out Canadian hopes

Scrap the tobacco ban and get your race back - that was the stark message from Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone after a last-gasp bid by Canadian Grand Prix promoters to cling on to its place in the racing calendar.

Ecclestone had earlier confirmed Canada would be pulled from the calendar due to its government ban on tobacco advertising - but that did not stop a delegation meeting with him during the Hungarian GP at the weekend in a bid to change his mind.

However, Ecclestone has stood firm, and despite suggestions federal government could allow a one-year exemption for Formula One, only a long-term deal would allow the circuit back on track.
Said Ecclestone: "They should give us a permanent exemption.
"If an exemption is good for one year, why not for 20?
"How many other sporting events in your country attract 300 million television viewers around the world?
"If the governments of Quebec and Canada truly believe the Grand Prix is an important event for the country, they need to review their laws and adjust them to reflect the importance of the event.
"We could reinstate the Canadian Grand Prix the following year, if our problems with tobacco advertising are resolved."
