SABC land World Cup TV rights

The Infront Sports & Media Group has signed an exclusive deal with national broadcaster the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) for broadcast rights to the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

The deal covers all terrestrial television and radio rights in South Africa, as well as exclusive satellite rights in sub-Saharan African in the English language.

SABC sees the deal as a major coup for its newly-positioned SABC Sport brand, which has promised a diet of top level soccer coverage.

Said Oscar Frei, CEO of FIFA agent, Infront: "This new deal ensures a maximum audience and greatest impact."

Meanwhile, South Africa's hopes of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup were boosted after the German organising committee agreed it could play a hands-on role in its preparations for the 2006 tournament.
Said bid CEO Danny Jordaan: "We had an insightful meeting with Franz Beckenbauer [head of the German local organising committee for 2006], who promised that, if our bid is successful, he will give us the opportunity to work with them when they organise the 2006 spectacle."
