A joint statement issued after a meeting between Kim Un-yong,the South Korean vice president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Chang Ung, DPR Korea's representative to the IOC, said: "The Olympic committees of the two Koreas agreed to give support for fielding a unified team in the Athens Olympic Games and promoting inter-Korean sports exchanges for the sake of contributing to peace, stability, reconciliation and unification on the Korean Peninsula."
In the meeting, Kim Un-yong and Chang Ung also discussed the possibilities to merge the two rival international taekwondo bodies.
In a preliminary step toward merging the two taekwondo bodies, Kim and Chang agreed to establish a coordination committee to settle technical differences in rules and techniques.
To that end, the two officials will meet in Beijing in late October with Kim planning to visit DPR Korea to hold a follow-up meeting.
Democratic People's Republic of Korea and South Korea have agreed to send a unified team to compete in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
