Who will win the Premiership?

Tagged in &

A new three-year television deal for English soccer's Premier League is expected to be unveiled today - with the price-tag set to be around £1bn ($1.61bn/EUR1.42bn).

The chairman of the 20 clubs will discuss the bids at a special meeting today, and while pay-TV platform Sky seems certain to secure the major package of live rights, covering the 2004/5 - 2006/7 seasons, it remains uncertain who will pick up the others.

The uncertainty stems from how far the Premier League wants to go to try and ensure no run in with the European Commission which will clamp down hard if it suspects the new deal is anti-competitive.

In a bid to fend off any such criticism, the Premier League has already introduced two new packages which should ensure the return of live broadcasts on free-to-air terrestrial.

Sky is set to scoop the gold and silver packages of 38 games each, but despite bidding also for the two bronze packages, in a bid to retain exclusivity, it seems likely the BBC and ITV will make a strong case and find suitable funds.

The last three-year deal cost Sky and ITV - which won the terrestrial highlights package - £1.4bn ($2.26bn/EUR1.99bn).
