Three people reported to be close to group leader Dan Snyder will each buy a stake, with the total purchase said to be worth $200 million (B177m).
The deal is pending before the NFL’s finance committee and is expected to be completed some time next month. Snyder will remain the majority owner and in charge of team operations.
Money from the sale will be used to pay off some of the team’s debt, which at one point was said to be over $500m (B442.6m).
The ownership group of the Washington Redskins is to sell around 20 percent of the NFL team, according to US media reports.
