GEM of a deal for Lisbon

Sports marketing company the GEM Group has been appointed to boost the Portuguese bid to host the 2007 Americas Cup.

GEM, part of the CSS Stellar group, will help in Lisbon's bid to land the right to stage the event. It is currently one of five cities in the race.

GEM will be working for COAC 2007 (a Portuguese Government task force) in Cascais and will be responsible for providing consultancy and producing Lisbon's bid documentation.

The GEM team will be headed up by senior account director, Mark Bullingham.

Said Bullingham: "This is a fabulous opportunity for GEM. The combination of our sailing experience and work with major event bids over the years will enable us to help Lisbon and Cascais communicate their extremely strong bid."

It is the first time there has been a bidding process for the event. Normally, the defending champions host the event but earlier this year land-locked Switzerland triumphed to take the cup away from New Zealand.

A final decision on the venue will be made on December 15.
