Redskins face trademark chaos

The Washington Redskins are awaiting a ruling as to whether they will be allowed to retain their federal trademark protection over the 'Redskins' name - or face a marketing nightmare.

The petitioners in the case, a group of native Americans, won a case in 1999 arguing they found the name offensive. Now US District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly is considering the ruling following an appeal.

Should the Washington Redskins lose the appeal, they are likely to lose their exclusive rights to market the Redskins name.

The outcome of the bitter battle which has led to a war of words between the two sides should be known in the next few weeks.
