LPGA signs Sybase wireless deal

Sybase has secured a sponsorship deal to become the official wireless software provider of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).

In addition to the provision of wireless software, Sybase will serve as title sponsor to the LPGA's event in the New York City area until 2006, and effective with the 2004 event the tournament will be called the Sybase Classic and feature a $1.25million purse.
The 2004 Sybase Classic will be played from May 20-23 and again will be played at Wykagyl Country Club, host site of the event since 1990. The $1.25m purse represents a $300,000 increase in prize money from the 2003 event, with the winner earning $187,500.
For the first time in the event's history, all four rounds of the event will be televised by ESPN.
The 2004 Sybase Classic is owned by the LPGA and managed by sports marketing agency Octagon.
As the official wireless software of the LPGA, Sybase plans to showcase their Wi-Fi Hot Spot technology at selected markets in 2004. The Wi-Fi Hot Spots will allow laptop and PDA users to have high-speed Internet access at tournament sites in 2004.
