McCain demands USOC restructure

Sweeping changes to the United States Olympic Association (USOC) have moved a step closer after Senator John McCain told external and internal reform panels to settle their remaining differences.

The directive, made at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing, highlights McCain’s intention to revamp the organisation quickly and give it more of a say in its restructure.
McCain is demanding changes to the 1978 Amateur Sports Act, which put the USOC in charge of the USA’s Olympic programmes. He wants the amendments passed and signed into law before a congressional recess in early August.
Both reform panels agree that the USOC board needs to be reduced from its current 123 members to around ten, but compromise still needs to be reached on its make-up and on the role of the new ‘Olympic Assembly’.
