The city's council has agreed to commission a $25,000 study to assess the feasibilty of a 2014 Commonwealth Games bid.
Hamilton, a city of about 100,000, would be considered small compared to Wellington who pulled out of the 2006 bid because of the costs involved.
Former New Zealand Olympic Committee board member Geoff Balme believes that hosting the Games is attainable even considering that Melbourne's 2006 Games will cost an estimated $1.2billion.
The potential bid raises the possibility that there will be back-to-back Games in Hamilton given the city's namesake in Canada is pursuing the 2010 Games.
