Laporta wins Barca presidency

Joan Laporta has swept into power at Spanish soccer giant Barcelona after a landslide victory in the presidential election.

Laporta, won 52.5 percent of the votes - easily beating off his biggest rival Lluis Bassat.

Bassat had long been favourite to win the presidency, but Laporta campaigned heavily and promised to bring Manchester United and England star David Beckham to the Nou Camp should he win.

Although he has signed an agreement with United to sell Beckham, it is looking increasingly likely that the player does not want to join the Spanish team, and is more likely to move to either Real Madrid or AC Milan.
Speaking after his victory, Laporta acknowledged the move was not now a certainty: "We are waiting to hear from Beckham. We completed the first stage of the transfer by winning this election, now we will speak to Beckham's representatives.
"I have never promised to sign David Beckham, I said we reached an agreement with Manchester United."
Beckham is a phenomenal commercial asset to any club - especially a club looking to broaden its horizons in territories such as Asia, where his following is immense.
