Athens 2004 hit by construction row

Media reports are claiming that vital construction work on some of the sites for Athens 2004 Olympics has been stopped.

According to press reports, the construction of an Olympic media village to be used for the Athens 2004 Games has been stopped by the Council of State, the country’s highest administrative court, because it was found that legislation used to zone the land was unconstitutional.
The same decision has also halted construction of a housing unit for security personnel.
The administrative decision was initially made in April but the ruling has only just begun to take effect. Work had already has begun on the village, located near the main Olympic stadium complex.
According to the Greek government the village would house 4,000 media representatives for the 2004 Games as one of a number of villages that will lodge 20,000 journalists covering the Games. The private venture is being built by a development company.
