Robinson has emerged late in the running following complications involving the previously attached candidates, former US ambassador Sir Christopher Meyer and Granada chairman Charles Allen.
Also in the frame for the post are Barbara Cassani, the businesswoman behind the low-cost airline Go, and Kevin Roberts, a senior executive with Saatchi and Saatchi.
Formal interviews for the figurehead post will take place next Wednesday and Thursday (June 11-12) with the interviewing panel consisting of Sue Street, permanent secretaryat the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Simon Clegg, chief executive of the British Olympic Association, Jeff Jacobs from the London mayor's office and an independent assessor.
A chief executive will also be appointed to work underneath the bid leader, handling the day-to-day running of the campaign.
