UEFA close to Italian TV deal

A breakthrough in negotiations has been achieved which should lift the threat of a UEFA Champions League TV blackout in Italy - home of the newly crowned champions AC Milan.

Talks for a new three-year deal between Italian broadcasters Mediaset and Sky Italia had stalled after UEFA rejected the EUR50m per season bid.

However, following feverish talks between senior executives and UEFA chiefs prior to the Champions League final in England this week, the bid was upped to EUR60m and a deal now seems imminent.

Said UEFA director of communications, Mike Lee: "Progress has been made and we hope a deal can be signed very soon."
