Hamilton aims high

Officials promoting Hamilton's bid to land the right to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games say success would bring a C$1.4bn ($0.72bn/EUR0.63bn) cash windfall to the local economy.

As bid representatives prepare to officially present its bid documentation in London, organisers of the Hamilton bid claim it is capable of hosting the event and making it a commercial success.

Said Jagoda Pike, chair of the Hamilton 2010 Bid Corporation: "Canada's bold and inclusive bid reflects the collective effort and commitment of our partners: the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, the City of Hamilton, McMaster University, The Hamilton Spectator and Commonwealth Games Canada.

"Our submission will underscore not only our ability to create an outstanding infrastructure and provide the expertise required to organise and host these Games, but will also define our commitment to add legacy value to the strong brand that is represented by this flagship event within the Commonwealth."

The Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario have confirmed they would each contribute C$250m if Hamilton is chosen to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

A final decision on where the Games will be staged will be made by the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly meeting in Jamaica on November 13.
