The FIFA Emergency Committee confirmed the decision to relocate event to the US after the bidding process was reopened following the last minute decision to pull-out of China.
Although FIFA confirmed last week only two official bids had been received - one from the US, one from Sweden, it now claims to have been approached with offers from Australia, Italy and Canada.
But whatever the situation, the US were always seen as hot favourite to host the event - with facilities already in place and the women's game still popular following the national team's success in the previous tournament in 1999.
The exact schedule of the competition will be announced shortly, but the tournament will still take place around the same period September 23 - October 11), with only a few minor changes to the schedule.
Said FIFA president Sepp Blatter: "I would like to sincerely thank those national associations that declared an interest in organising the FIFA Women's World Cup 2003 in such trying circumstances.
"The Women's World Cup in 1999 was so successful that FIFA is delighted to see the event return to the United States. Finally, I would like to reiterate my gratitude to the Chinese Football Association for their understanding and cooperation with FIFA following the Executive Committee's decision."
The 2007 event will now be staged in China.
