London 2012 bid hopes boost

London's hopes of bidding for the 2012 Olympic Games have received a timely boost after new research revealed seven out of 10 Londoners believed there would be long-term social benefits to hosting the event.

The MORI poll comes as the UK government is poised to back the bid - a decision delayed since the outbreak of hostilities in Iraq.
The full findings of the research will be exclusively revealed at SportAccord in Madrid later this month.
MORI's research also reveals that around three in five (56 percent) residents of the North West of England felt that the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester helped improve the quality of life in the area.
The positive effects on the local economy, transport facilities, infrastructure and an increased investment in the region are the specific benefits identified in the research.
Peter Hasler, head of sport research at MORI, will be presenting the research at SportAccord, the international sports convention taking place between May 12-16.
Said Hasler: "The research is indicative of just how positive opinion is amongst Londoners, as well as people across the UK, for hosting the Olympics in 2012.
"The results from the Manchester area prove that high profile international events can leave a long lasting and sustainable legacy that benefits the area and its people."
The success of Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008 will have a strong impact on people's future perceptions of hosting the Olympics. MORI's research shows that public opinion in China for the 2008 Olympics is extremely positive. A very persuasive 86 percent of those polled agreed that the event would bring social benefits to the Beijing area.
SportAccord is a week long programme of open conference sessions, workshops and seminars dedicated to every aspect of the sports industry.
