Chirac confirms Paris 2012 bid?

Media reports suggest that French president Jacques Chirac has officially confirmed Paris' intention to bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Chirac reportedly announced Paris' 2012 bid at a summit in St Petersburg where a number of national leaders met to discuss the war in Iraq.
Paris is heavily expected to apply to host the Games in 2012 after coming third in the race for the 2008 Olympics, losing out to the Chinese city of Beijing.
The confirmation of Paris' involvement sees it enter the fray to compete with Madrid, New York and Leipzig - the three other cities that have officially confirmed they will be bidding for the 2012 Games.
Further bids are expected from Rome, Moscow and London with the much-delayed decision from the UK government regarding the latter's bid scheduled to be finally announced this week.
The International Olympic Committee has set a July deadline for bids for the 2012 Olympics to be submitted.
