United in credit with Barclaycard

English Premier League giant Manchester United has signed a five-year deal with Barclaycard to promote club-branded credit cards outside of the UK.

The agreement with Barclays Bank PLC, gives Barclaycard the rights to market Manchester United cards anywhere outside the UK.

Barclaycard, who currently issue more than 12 million cards in 62 countries across Europe, Africa and the Caribbean, can also sub-licence the rights to other credit card operators.

It is in talks with partner banks to promote the cards in the US, China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand.

The deal, which adds to Barclaycard’s title sponsorship of the Barclaycard Premiership, will tap into United's massive overseas audience.

Says Gary Hoffman, Barclaycard chief executive, said: "There is a massive international following for United and we see this as a big opportunity which allows us to harness the global power of the Manchester United brand with our capability and expertise in the credit card market.

"This is a significant step towards our goal of building a global card business and we are confident of making this alliance a success for ourselves, United and of course thousands of their fans around the world."

In the UK, Manchester United have acquired 50,000 credit cards through an agreement with MBNA.

Barclaycard will become one of Manchester United's key commercial partners extending the range of financial services relationships already associated with the club under the MU Finance banner including Britannia Building Society, Endsleigh Insurance, MBNA Europe Bank and Zurich Financial Services.
