FIFA scores financial surplus

Soccer world governing body FIFA has reported a major turn-around in financial estimates to deliver a SF115m ($82.54m/EUR77.34m) revenue surplus for the four year-cycle from 1999-2002.

It marks a major achievement for FIFA which during that time saw the collapse of long-time marketing partner ISL and the disintegration of Kirch, which controlled the TV rights to the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

It claimed the speedy establishment of FIFA Marketing - the in-house operation set up primarily of former ISL-staff to service its tournaments - as a key reason for its success.
