Vancouver alters 2010 bid dates

The Canadian city of Vancouver has moved back the proposed dates in its bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympics in order to avoid a scheduling clash with the Super Bowl.

Vancouver, which is competing with Pyeongchang and Salzburg to host the 2010 Games, has altered the dates it had originally put down for the Winter Olympics by a week in order to avoid running against the climax of the NFL season.
Should the Canadian city emerge victorious when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announces the winning bid at the beginning of July, the 2010 Winter Games will start on February 12 running through until February 28.
Explained John Furlong, president and chief operating officer of the Vancouver bid corporation: "The reason for the change is to ensure that the marketing period is a clear period for the Games to be staged in.
"There were events scheduled in the original two-week period that made it a little bit more difficult from a marketing perspective. The big one being the Super Bowl. We think it's a good decision from our perspective to have the dates moved."
