Cities make bids for Expos franchise

The US districts of Portland, Oregon and Columbia have all put their cases forward to Major League Baseball to be considered as the new home for the Montreal Expos franchise.

The three cities made formal presentation pitches to MLB officials on plans to build and finance new ballparks - the first time each of the cities has approached baseball's governing body.
The MLB committee had met with the above mentioned groups and a delegation from Northern Virginia in late January to tell them what a proposal should contain, including new ballparks largely paid for with public funds.
A Northern Virginia group will meet with the committee today, which hopes to select the team's new home and new owner by July's All-Star Game. It's not known if the team will relocate in time for the 2004 season.
