AFL gets tough

The AFL's enforcement of salary cap rules is to step up a gear after the sport confirmed it will start a major player payment audit later this month.

AFL Football Operations manager Andrew Demetriou confirmed it would begin its series of Total Player Payment (TPP) audits at all 16 clubs later this month.
Demetriou said AFL investigations manager Ken Wood has written to all clubs today to outline the AFL's review process.
The review of all 16 clubs was flagged by the AFL Commission late last year, in the wake of the breaches by the Carlton Football Club, and was intended to be completed before the 2003 finals series.
Said Demetriou: "The AFL Commission allocated extra funding money in this year's investigations department budget to enable these audits to occur as the AFL remains fully committed to ensuring the salary cap rules are enforced."
Demetriou added that the AFL had received written advice from the Australian Tax Office (ATO) that the ATO would be conducting audits of players and clubs during the coming months.
"The AFL fully supports the steps announced by the ATO and trusts that all clubs and players are complying with their taxation obligations," he said.
"The Draft Rules and the TPP Rules are central planks of our competition and must be protected to ensure that all clubs can approach each season with a realistic and equal chance of success."
