CART's losses speed up

Mixed fortunes for troubled US motorsport CART after its successful takeover of promoters of the Grand Prix of Americas was overshadowed by news of massive losses in 2002.

Net losses totalled $14.5m in 2002, according to its latest finance figures, although CART CEO Chris Pook remains confident for the future of the sport.

Speculation has been rife that the sport is facing a make-or-break period in its history following the departure of a number of top teams and drivers.
