Canal+ wins CL pay-TV rights

Canal+ has won the French pay-TV rights contract for the Champions League, beginning with the 2003/04 season, after signing a deal with UEFA.

The three-year rights deal, of which financial details are not known, will see Canal+'s Champions League coverage run alongside that of terrestrial broadcaster TF1 which bought up the free-to-air rights package last month.
In its deal, TF1 is awarded the match of its choice for live broadcast each week with Canal+ picking up the live rights to the remainder of the week's games which could total as much as 15 matches.
In addition, Canal+ will also show highlights programmes on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights each week as well as delayed coverage of games and a magazine programme.
The combination of the Canal+ and TF1 deals ensures that all Champions League games will be available to French viewers for the first time.
Canal+ currently broadcasts Champions League coverage via a sub-license deal with TF1 - the new contract beginning next season representing the first time the pay-TV broadcaster has dealt directly with UEFA and its marketing partner TEAM.
