Socceroos aim for London sell-outs

Australian soccer chiefs are hoping to win support for a new four-team international tournament to be held in the UK.

Following a suggestion from the English Football Association, Australian soccer chief Remo Nogarotto is keen to see the Australian national team, the Socceroos, play three teams from England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales.

He hopes to capitalise on the huge number of ex-pat Australians working and living in the UK.

Said Nogarotto: "There is enormous interest from English clubs to stage internationals. We want to play a regular set of fixtures in London where we could maximise crowd attendances and sponsorship opportunities.
"It makes sense to play Ireland at Stamford Bridge rather than a team like Switzerland. I've never quite understood why we've never done something like this before.
"We have to be selective who we chose and whether we should link ourselves with a Premier League club. Of course, the economics must be acceptable."
Talks on the possibility of the tournament are expected to take place in the coming weeks.
