Games headquarters stays put

The central rights-holding organisation for the Commonwealth Games has dismissed claims it could move its headquarters out of London and into Australia.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) said it will continue to be based in London for the foreseeable future after UK Sport confirmed its levels of funding for the organisation from 2003 onwards.

With the next Commonwealth Games due to be held in Melbourne in 2006, there had been speculation that the CGF may relocate to Australia. However, any suggestion of this has been averted through the ongoing support of UK Sport, who will contribute £75,000 ($118,850/EUR108,732) towards the CGF’s running costs in 2003.

Said Richard Callicott, chief executive of UK Sport: “It is in the UK’s interest to retain a core of world governing bodies.

“Following the success of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester last year, UK Sport is delighted that the CGF’s headquarters will remain in the UK and we look forward to building upon the excellent relationship we already enjoy with them.”

Other world governing bodies currently residing in the UK include the International Tennis Federation and the International Cricket Council (both in London); the World Squash Federation (Hastings); the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (Bristol); the International Sailing Federation (Southampton); the World Curling Federation (Perth); and World Bowls Ltd (Edinburgh).
